SHOULD KNOW
This section mentions
some things that make your visit
less-than-enjoyable. Depending on where you are
coming from, some of these may not be an issue.
- Security:
Some places in Nigeria are not that safe.
Always take precautions when traveling, and
don't trust too easily.
- Roads:
Not all roads are paved, especially when you
start to get out of the cities.
- Traffic:
Traffic can be a huge problem. Go-slows,
traffic-jams, etc. can be very common in the
cities.
- Water:
Once again, depending on where you are
staying, there may not always be a constant
supply of running water. Also, if there is
running water, it may not be suitable for
drinking, but in those cases, the place will
usually have a supply that is (it just may not
be from the tap).
- Electricity:
This is not always in constant supply. If the
place you are staying does not have an
electric generator, there may be times that
you will be without power. However, most
places are equipped for this in terms of
having an ample supply of candles, lanterns,
etc.
- Phones:
Phones are not readily available in all areas.
They are more common in the cities though.
- Scams: I
have a link to scams that you should be
careful to avoid. Of course, this is not
limited to the traveler.
- Health:
If you are concerned about the health risks of
traveling to Nigeria, Nigerian Galleria has a
section on health advice for travelers, and
the Center for Disease Control has a health
guide for travel to West Africa.
- Of course, there
are other links with warnings to the traveler,
but I take them with a grain of salt. A quick
glance at this link shows that it might be
pretty helpful
